Position The car sends coordinates and heading while it is awake. We never wake it to ask.

Battery charge The percentage no tracker can read - it comes from the car itself.

Odometer The car's own reading, not a figure inferred from distance travelled.

Lock, horn, lights The three actions you can trigger from the dashboard. No unlocking - deliberately.

    Give permission

    In Devices, press Connect Tesla. You sign in to your own Tesla account and approve the access. Approve location too - without it there is nothing to put on the map.

    Pair the key in your car

    Open the link on your phone and the Tesla app asks you to add SimpleGPS as a key. You need to be near the car.

    This is the step people skip. Tesla does not let us near the car just because you signed in - the car itself has to accept us, and only you can tell it to.

    Start streaming

    Press Start next to the car. If it returns an error, step two almost certainly did not finish - go back, pair the key, and try again.

    Done

    The car sits on the live map beside your other vehicles, with trip history, geofences, alerts and reports.

Requires firmware 2024.26 or newer. For a Model S or Model X with an Intel Atom computer, 2025.20 or newer. Check it in the car under Controls → Software.

What the car gives you, and what a tracker gives you

Only through the Tesla account

  • Battery charge level
  • Whether the car is charging right now
  • Exact odometer, from the car itself
  • Lock, horn and lights from the app

Only with a hidden tracker

  • Detects a GPS or GSM jammer
  • Catches a tow or a lift with the car switched off
  • Keeps working even if you revoke Tesla access

These do not replace each other. The account connection is telemetry and convenience; the hidden tracker is theft. Plenty of owners run both.
